Cyberbullying Research

We all know of the horrors that have occurred during the past year and a half because of bullying and cyberbullying.  Marialice Curran and I are conducting research on cyberbullying.  The purpose of this study is to develop an in depth understanding of how students, teachers and parents define and view cyberbullying. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, two-thirds of our teens go online every day to complete schoolwork, communicate with friends, play games, listen to music and socially network with others.  Our students are connected to technology 24/7 which means that more are at risk to becoming either an aggressor or a victim of cyberbullying (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010).  The more children continue to consume and produce digital media the more educators need to be aware of cyber ethics, safety and security.  The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) conducted a recent study found that fewer than one-fourth of U.S. teachers have had any professional development on teaching cyber ethics in the classroom (ESchool News, April 2010).  The implications are staggering and the need to make this an integral part of any teacher professional development is paramount.
