Mrs. Mercier!
"Mrs. Mercier, Shawn just called me a moron!"
Statements like these are common in and out of a classroom. There are a variety of reasons why children call others names that include frustration, anger, resentment, and feelings of inequity. We know that saying unkind things to others is hurtful to the other person and exacerbates the problem. We know that it can be difficult for children to maintain friends if they continuously engage in this behavior. We also know that if children engage in face-to-face name calling the likelihood of them engaging in online name calling is high. With the increase of online communication it is imperative that we begin with face to face interactions.
