What Kind of Fruit are You?

I'm not talking about what fruit you prefer to eat, I'm talking about your body, silly! In fact, knowing what type of fruit you are has nothing to do with eating the fruit itself.

Through some research, I found out that I was an apple! This helped me figure out how to eat for my body shape, and since then I've never looked back. Why is this so important? The location of excess body fat tells you a lot about what’s going on inside your body. Not only can it help you with weight loss, knowing our own body shape can play a key role in your future health.

APPLE: The apple shaped person, usually has slimmer legs, narrow hips and a large waist. They tend to carry the most fat in waist area, which can lead to heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Yikes! Basically, if most of your fat is stored above the waist, you're an apple.

PEAR: The pear shaped person, usually has a more defined waist and a smaller upper body. They tend to gain weight on their thighs, bottom and hips. If most of the fat you store is below the waist - you're a pear.

Pretty easy to determine what fruit you are from those short statements, isn't it? Alright, so what do you do with this new found knowledge? Well, this theory has become so wildly simple and popular, that books have been written; as well as a list of foods that should be eaten for each body type.  Knowing these foods can help your shape burn fat and live a more healthy lifestyle.

Okay apple shapes, your list consists of foods that are higher in fiber, which slow down the digestion of sugars and cholesterol levels. This will give you the best weapon against developing heart disease or diabetes. I'm not going to list them all here, but high fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and oils such as olive and flaxseed are key.

Pear shape people, your list consists of low-fat, higher protein and complex carbohydrate foods. The more fat you eat, the more your body stores and the worst part is, it doesn't want to get rid of it; which means fat on top of more fat. This often leads to a poor body image; putting you at a higher risk of having an eating disorder. Pear shapes also have a higher risk of osteoporosis and varicose veins.  Depending on how much extra weight you are carrying, you could be at risk for the same diseases an apple shaped person is.  So start eating foods such as whole grain breads, beans and lentils, and lean protein. Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/464839-pear-shape-diet/

Now that you know what type of fruit you are, you can make some "mindful choices" about the food you eat.

  1. People think it's crazy, but without even thinking about body shape, I can tell that my body requires higher protein and complex carbs. Interestingly, when I do that, I feel soooo much better!
